If saniderm was used:
Saniderm Aftercare
Saniderm locks in the body’s natural moisture and healing enzymes, allowing the body to heal itself in the most efficient manner possible. Locking in these healing elements allows the skin to continue to function as normal because the bandage is permeable to oxygen and water vapor (breathable). In addition, Saniderm protects against dirt and germs while eliminating friction and other irritations that might further interfere with the healing process.
After the bandage has been applied it should be left on for 2-4 days. If any edges start to peel up you can tape them down or just leave them as is. The longer it stays on the better and will also give you maximum healing potential.
Saniderm is waterproof, so you may shower with it on. In general, any long time submergence (swimming pools, hot tubs, etc.) is not recommended when healing a tattoo.
After about 8-12 hours (or sooner), the tattoo underneath may appear to look as if the ink is spreading or leaking. There will also be a buildup of darker liquids. This is completely normal and part of the healing process.
When taking Saniderm off, remove it in the shower. The lubrication of the water will help it come off. After removing the bandage, wash it with a basic liquid soap and water, and then pat dry.
After the bandage has been removed, use any kind of unscented lotion like Lubriderm or Curell. Nothing with a scent because it will burn and irritate the location. Use lotion whenever the tattoo feels dry or itchy. Never pick or itch your healing tattoo. Keep your tattoo out of direct sun until it’s healed. When your tattoo is healed we always recommend using some sort of sunscreen to protect it. Tattoos typically take about 2 weeks to fully heal.
If Saniderm wasn’t used:
Standard Aftercare:
Remove the temporary saran wrap bandage within an hour or two of receiving the tattoo. The bandage is only on to prevent the tattoo from seeping onto your clothes.
For the first 2-3 days apply a VERY light and thin layer of Aquaphor ointment once at morning and once at night. It is very important not to apply excessive amounts of ointment to your fresh tattoo. If you notice any small red or white bumps appearing around your tattoo, your pores are clogged and you should stop applying ointment.
After the first 2-3 days, use any unscented lotion such as Lubriderm or Curell – nothing with a scent or it will burn and irritate the location. You can use the lotion whenever the tattoo is dry or itchy.
Do not keep your tattoo continuously moist, this is unhealthy and doesn’t allow the tattoo to properly heal.
Avoid any longtime submergence of water such as pools, hot tubs, and baths.
Do not pick, scratch or itch your tattoo. If your tattoo itches or flakes then apply lotion to relieve it.
Avoid sunlight exposure directly to your tattoo while healing. Once healed you should always apply sunscreen to protect the longevity of your tattoo.
